Corcovado National Park Tour

  • SumoMe

La Sirena Ranger Station Costa Rica CorcovadoCorcovado National park is the most intense biological place in Costa Rica. There are just 3 ranger stations with limited access. The national park consist of 80% of primary forest. With some luck and experienced guides you can see tapirs, peccaries, pumas, lots of birds (over 360 species), all four species monkey species that live in Costa Rica, and millions of plants. You can enter the park through La Leona ranger station or Los Patos Ranger station. Sirena Ranger Station is the only one that offers rooms to stay. In all others you can only camp. Sirena Ranger station is located 19km from La Leona and 24km from Los Patos. The best route for animal sighting, which is also easier to hike, is from La Leona to Sirena. If you want to pass by all three ranger stations it is recommended to hike from Los Patos to Sirena and then to La Leona.

Guides

A guide is not a must – but it is always recommended. The costs start from around $120.00 for 1-3 people or $45.00 per person on groups bigger than 3 people. The trails on the park are very clear and easy, so you can walk by yourselves. However, your experience will be much better with a guide, since they know where to find the animals. Most animals in the jungle are very hidden and camouflaged, and thus finding them without experience is almost impossible. Spider Monkey sighting in Corcovado National Park Costa RicaThe guide will also tell you a lot about the history of the area, gold panning stories, and interesting facts about the animals and plants. Furthermore, a guide is also recommend for safety reasons. Guides are certified by the MINAET (the Costa Rican government) and are trained with first aid and CPR procedures. There a different levels of knowledge among the guides, and some guides are more experienced than others. Osa Tropical works with guides which have a lot of experience and are well qualified.

Entrance

The park entrance fee is $10.00 per person per day. It is necessary to buy the entrance ticket in advance as the ranger stations do not accept payments for entrance fees (no cash or credit cards). If you book through Osa Tropical, we will purchase your entrance tickets and make the necessary reservations.

Lodging

When staying overnight in the park you can decide whether you want to stay in the dormitory rooms or in their camping area. Both need to be booked in advance in order to find space available. The cost for lodging in their rooms is $8.00 per person and per night. This will guarantee a bed inside a room (bunk beds). The guest needs to provide sheets for the bed and blankets (necessary). Optional you can bring mosquito nets and pillows. The cost for camping is $4.00 per person. This will guarantee a space in their camping area. The guest needs to provide a tent, sleeping foam or matt, sheets for the bed and blanket (necessary). It is important to consider that the hike between La Leona and Sirena ranger stations is long (19 km / 6-8 hours) and the less you carry the best. We always recommend to stay in the ranger station’s rooms as you avoid carrying a tent on your hike between ranger stations. It also depends on availability, since rooms usually fill up fast in the high season.

MealsCorcovado National Park from above Costa Rica

When staying in Sirena (camping or lodging) you are also entitled to use their kitchen installations. They have a kitchen area where you can prepare your meals. This do not includes supplies, kitchenette, gas or utensils. This items need to be provided by the guest (the guide can provide these for an extra fee). Often the guide has cooking utensils too. All the groceries need to be bought in Puerto Jimenez and carried all the way to Sirena. Sirena Ranger station also offers meals at a cost. They offer breakfast at $20.00 per person, lunch at $25.00 per person and Dinner at $25.00 per person. All these need to be reserved and paid in advance. Meals are very big (after the hiking this is perfect) and delicious. If available we recommend this rather than cooking for yourselves.

Transportation

Taxi

The taxi cost from Matapalo to Carate is $80.00 for a maximum of 6 people. This transfer is one way. The taxi is more comfortable, faster and private. You can request stops at your pleasure in case of wildlife sightseeing on the way. The guide will come with you in the taxi. He might be able to point out wildlife along the way.

Public Transport

Public Transportation (Colectivo) is also available. The collectivo is a truck that goes twice a day from Puerto Jimenez to Carate (passing by Matapalo). The cost is $8.00 per person and per way. The ride from Puerto Jimenez to Carate takes 2-3 hours, and around 1 hour from Matapalo. It departs from Puerto Jimenez at 6:00am and 1:30pm, and passes by Matapalo by 7:00am and 2:30pm (Approx). If you are taking the truck in Matapalo I would recommend to wait for it at least 15 minutes before (6:45am or 2:15pm) the approximate schedule. On the way Back the Colectivo departs from Carate at 8:30am and 4:00pm and arrives 2 hours later to Puerto Jimenez. It passes by Matapalo at around 9:30am and 5:00pm. Flying into and out of Sirena Station in Corcovado National Park Costa Rica

Flights

You can also fly into Sirena. The Sirena landing strip is only 500 meters long and is made of grass. The flights can’t be made before 8:00am as the grass will still be too wet from the night before. The aircraft can only take 4 people at the time. Each flight cost $390.00 per way (in total, divided by 4 people it is only around 100 USD, often flights can be shared in the high season and are thus cheaper).

Boat

Osa Tropical can also offer you another way of transportation that might be even better in terms of adventure and cheaper. We can get you a boat to take you from Matapalo (avoiding the drive to Puerto Jimenez) to Sirena. The boat ride will be something close to 1 hour and 15 minutes. The sights are amazing. The chances of watching sea wildlife are very high. You can be picked up in Back wash (or Pan Dulce) bay at 5:30am and get to Sirena no later than 7:00am. Nothing like the early morning to spot wildlife. The boat will include the guide, the captain, soft drinks, water and fresh fruit.  Please be advised that the schedule suggested is subject to change. The transportation in Boat is tide and swell dependent. The price varies depending on how many people are traveling. It is between  $550 for 1 to 6 people and $800 up to 10 people
